About the book

Born in a military family, how does Martha turn into a peace activist? She is a fictional character created by the world-famous writer Bertha von Suttner (1843-1914). Bertha was a real person and is the hero of this story. Or is Jazzy our hero? She is a young photographer who investigates her own ideals in today's The Hague. And what was this Bertha actually doing in the city of Peace and Justice?

Who is Bertha von Suttner?

Countess Bertha Sophia Felicita Countess Kinsky von Wchinitz und Tettau, was born in Prague on June 9 in 1843. She secretly married Baron Arthur von Suttner in 1876. At the end of the nineteenth century she emerged as an important and influential peace activist and became world famous with her novel 'Lay Down Your Arms!'. She was present in The Hague during the international peace conferences of 1899 and 1907 and at the opening of the Peace Palace in 1913. She had a great influence on Alfred Nobel and convinced him to establish his peace prize. Bertha died on June 21, 1914 in Vienna.

The Hague 125 years City of Peace and Justice

In 2024 it will be 125 years since the first Hague Peace Conference was held in 1899: the start of the city as a global icon for the pursuit of Peace through Justice.

The Peace Palace is an anchor point of this and the legacy of Bertha von Suttner is undisputed.

Learn more about her and her world-famous novel 'Lay Down your Arms!' in our graphic novel.

September 21 is the United Nations International Day of Peace. That day, The Hague is dedicated to celebrating of and working towards peace.
