Who is Bertha von Suttner?
The first female laureate of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1905, was the adventurous peace activist, Bertha Sophia Felicita Countess Kinsky von Wchinitz und Tettau, born in 1843.
She secretly married baron Arthur von Suttner and both became a journalists and writers. After publishing her novel 'Lay down your arms!' she she became world famous and a leading European peace activist, advocating European cooperation.
Bertha von Suttner visited in The Hague during the international peace conferences of 1899 and 1907 and at the opening of the Peace Palace in 1913. She heavily influenced Alfred Nobel and convinced him to establish a peace prize. Bertha died on 21 June 1914 in Vienna.
